I was not prepared for the devastation. Any of the buildings that had large windows, lost them on the ocean side during the storm. The resulting water damage ruined everything inside. Those buildings with smaller windows survived virtually unscathed.
The first thing you notice is that the vegetation was almost wiped out. Most palm trees uprooted, those that weren't lost their leaves. The jungle is a tangle of defoliated growth.
Only about one in three hotels or businesses were open on the island called the Hotel Zone.
Many buildings will have to be demolished. The beach on our section of the island was mostly unaffected. It seemed quite normal.
I have a time share in the Caribe Tower, which was not affected and in the Royal tower, which was heavily damaged.
In spite of that we had a wonderful 14 days in Cancun. Click here for my book list.
